The breakdown of steady state equilibrium, via bifurcations, to a multistable system, and finally to chaos. Complex urban systems exist at the edge of this chaotic state. Whilst cybernetics was only equipped to deal with the dynamics of non-linear systems with single stable states, complexity science explored the breakdown to multistability and beyond.
