Ethnic Distribution of Chicago Residents · Each colour represents a different ethnicity · Bill Rankin (2009)

One of the lasting legacies of the Chicago School of urban sociology are Chicago’s official “community areas”, drawn up in the 1920s. Bill Rankin’s Chicago Dots project shows how these policy boundaries are sharply evident in the ethnic and income distributions of Chicago’s population. Voids and gradients also serve as transitions along boundary lines, but the lasting influence of the community area boundaries in shaping the spatial distribution of the population is unquestionable.
